I have created countless wonderful memories at Opunake Beach over the past 21 years and witnessed numerous breathtaking sunsets. During the summer, the beach is absolutely fantastic, with active lifeguards and a bustling atmosphere on sunny days. Finding a parking spot down the hill can be a challenge, but there is ample parking available up the hill. Additionally, they organize a beach carnival complete with food stalls and a Miss Opunake pageant. The local convenience store is only open during the holidays, and the beach camp has been upgraded and expanded, although the prices have increased in recent years. Even to this day, I firmly believe that Opunake Beach remains one of the finest beaches I have ever visited, offering excellent opportunities for swimming, surfing, and paddleboarding.
The beach in Opunake is absolutely stunning, situated in a charming coastal town. It is flanked by cliffs on either side, offering a picturesque view. You can take a leisurely stroll through the garden at the top and continue along the cliff, enjoying the breathtaking scenery. This beach is a part of the coastal walkway and also features a surf lifesaving club, a campground, and a small store where you can indulge in delicious ice cream. Additionally, the cliffs are adorned with magnificent Pohutukawa trees that bloom with vibrant red flowers during Christmas time.
I love going to this beach because it's spacious and wide, and you can often see surfers riding the waves. Sometimes the waves are great, and other times it's calm and peaceful. It's a perfect spot for a picnic lunch, and there's a holiday facility and children's playground that are easy to access. There's also a surf lifesaving club right on the beach. You can simply relax and gaze at the sea, enjoy an ice cream, or even take a dip or go for a swim if the weather is nice. If you drive a few minutes up the road, you can get a great view of Opunake Beach from above and maybe even catch a beautiful sunset.
We love coming to this beach every time. When the tide is low, there are fantastic rock pools that the kids can explore. The playground is always a favorite among the children, and we adore the picnic spots along the sandy shore. The public facilities are also good. The walkways are pleasant, and the views are stunning.
This beach has everything you need for a family outing. It offers a swimming pool, swings, and a playground for kids, as well as great beaches for rugby, volleyball, swimming, and surfing. You can even park your holiday camper van and spend the day here. The place is also patrolled by lifeguards, ensuring safety. When the tide is low, the sandy beach stretches about 400 meters from the surf club. It's a fantastic spot for families to hang out.
