Really liked this beach! Has black sand and was hardly anyone there when I visited on a Sunday midday. The car park is a 5min walk to the beach through sanddunes - be sure to wear shoes on a hot day as sand can get very hot
The beach is absolutely beautiful, two different entrances, with one being a longer walk towards the beach and the other being right next to it. Sometimes the waves are extremely large and the current is super strong. Great for surfing 👍.
Too windy and too rough of seas to play on the ocean, but it was still a wonderful beach to play at for a few hours.
If you love seclusion and space this beach is for you. Great for long walks and watching the sun go down. We saw people fishing there too. It's less than 30 mins from where you turn off SH23 (Te Mata Road, then onto Ruapuke Road). The last section of the road is gravel and narrow in places. From the parking area it is a short stroll through the dunes to the beach (stick to the well trodden path so as not to damage plants, etc). Take jandals if its a hot day because the black sand can heat up and scorch the soles of your feet.
We took a detour here after visiting Bridal Veil Falls. This spot does not disappoint and worth the bumpy gravel road trip to get there. We made the mistake of driving to South end first and lugged all our gear for 10min around the dunes to access the beach. Doing this with 2 kids in tow felt like a mission. If you continue to drive another 5min North you reach North end road which has a carpark directly next to the beach, much more convenient.
