Unfortunately some people don‘t respect the wilderness and get too close to the WILD animals. Just for a photo that no one is interested in. Even when sleeping, a sea lion is an animal which killed several human in the past. It is always the same. When something happens because of the stupidity of people the crying and blaming of the animals begins. On sandfly bay visitors have the opportunity to see sea lions and maybe penguins from respectful distance. Respect the animals and don‘t act stupid.
Enjoyed a walk along the white sandy beach. Saw several sea lions hanging around so we have to keep distance and avoid disturbing them. Trekking up to the mountain top can be quite difficult with the steep path and very fine sand going through the shoes. Waterproof shoes are helpful.
One of the better beaches I’ve visited, almost the Gold Coast of nz. Super soft and fine sand, gets coarser nearer the water, seems like a small beach but it’s big enough not to feel the crowds. I visited at the height of summer, the sand on the beach was warm, the wind is gentle and comfortable, there are absolutely no sandflies unlike what the name says, and I had the loveliest time. Dogs are not allowed here because the beach is a resting place for sea lions and nesting area for yellow eyed penguins. I saw at least 8 sea lions when I was there. Would have walked into three of them if one of them didn’t raise a flipper when I was five metres away 😂 nice warning. It’s a steep descent to the beach - which also means a steep ascent back to the carpark - and can be challenging due to the super soft sand (it’s like walking up scree, u take two steps and slide down one). Be prepared to have a workout coming back up. Totally worth the effort though.
A nice place. Long walk down and up sand dunes and not guaranteed to see any wildlife. We saw one seal, and one penguin through the binoculars, about 300 meters off.
A beautiful shore coast with an amazing wild life - you’ll find sea lions and penguins around
