The beach has been closed for several years due to storm damage, with no bathrooms or pier access available. Despite federal funding being allocated over a year ago, no progress has been made on repairs. The Waveland business community should advocate for action to be taken, as this situation is detrimental to tourism.
The beach has showers, bathrooms, and shaded areas. The water is a great temperature, clear, and shallow enough for young kids to enjoy. My daughters and I ventured out quite far, with our youngest being 5 and our oldest 11. It's a fun way to spend the day. A tip: bring a tent (or two) to take a break from the sun.
The beach area is very nice, with restrooms on the second floor accessible by elevator. One bathroom stall was dirty, but that's not the fault of the pier - some people are just messy. There is seating on the top floor with a railing for safety, offering a great view of the beach and pier. The bottom floor has a cool concrete slab with a breeze, but no seating provided - you'll need to bring your own.
Waveland Pier is a great spot that is well-maintained and clean. You can drive right up to the pier and then take a stroll or go fishing if you're feeling adventurous (swimming is not recommended due to unpredictable water conditions, but it's still a 4-star experience). There are stairs as well as an elevator that can take you to the upper level of the Waveland facilities. Additionally, there is a park and memorial dedicated to armed forces and veterans. You can go for a jog or a leisurely walk along the concrete path that stretches for miles, offering a beautiful and peaceful experience. During my visit, I saw a family enjoying the day, with the dad teaching his little girl how to rollerblade. There were also others walking their dogs, enjoying the view with friends, or simply taking in the surroundings. Police were present to ensure safety and security. Overall, Waveland Pier is a hidden gem worth checking out.
It's a fantastic spot for a day trip. There's ample parking, a nice beach, sand volleyball courts, fishing, water for rinsing off, and gazebos for shade on the pier.
