Located at the end of the Wairau Valley Basin, this beach is made up of small stones, giving it a rugged appearance similar to a West Coast beach. It is not your typical sandy East Coast beach, but rather more wild and untamed. While not ideal for swimming due to varying conditions, it can range from calm to having decent swells on different days. On clear days, you can enjoy views of the North Island. Fishing for Kawhai is possible at the Diversion River Mouth, and there are several camping spots available, some of which are free or inexpensive DOC options.
The beach is a hidden gem, but make sure to check the tide times for a pleasant walk. Blue Gum Corner is a great starting point.
The beach is nice, but it can be a bit windy since it's a surf beach. However, it's definitely worth a visit and a swim when the sun is shining.
This beach is a rugged shingle beach with plenty of opportunities for long walks, exploring caves, and taking in the scenery. It's important to be cautious when swimming here, as the beach shelves steeply and the surf can be strong at times. At the northern end of the beach, there is a more sheltered cove called Monkey Bay, which can be accessed by steps. Additionally, there is a Department of Conservation campsite located at the northern end. It's worth noting that despite what Google may say, there is no beach pavilion at this location.
This beach is a fantastic spot to spend time in the summer. There are designated areas for camping and tenting, and although the sea can be a bit rough with large waves, I have seen people swimming in it. The beach is perfect for long walks, and there are plenty of facilities along the shore.
